Subjective reply to say the least. The keytar does the job for those that want to use it. I see there being no difference than using a clone. By rights a B3 sound should be seen coming out of a real B3, but then at this juncture, it comes out of a very small single manual keyboard with an X stand. You can say that it looks out of character and is self indulgent as well.

Can you do this on an SK1 or an Electro or Stage?

Or this?

Dated? The whole concept of a band is dated..If you pondered the episode with the Gaga experience, you will note that a whole new generation of young musicians who have never seen a keytar before, do not care if Grandpa thinks its dated. To them its a brand new very cool instrument.

Let's be objective about keytars:

Pro:
Lets the keyboard player move around on stage
Gives a similar visual dynamic to that of a guitarist
Uses less space on stage
Brings a keyboardist closer to his/her instrument

Con:
Expensive
Not visually appropriate for traditional musical forms (i.e. anything apart from funk, new-wave and 1980s tribute bands)
Ever tried playing a piano part (or anything requiring both hands) on one of these things?
Looks incredibly dated, self-indulgent and generally naff
Generally unnecessary

Hmmm... don't think I'll bother.
