Subject:Re: Ventilator rotors front stop?

Hi Nic,

Yes, that's true. The early Vents stopped at random positions like an
old school Leslie, while the newer ones stop in front. Complicating
this a little is the fact that the old ones also ran a short (2 sec.?)
burst of Chorale on the way down to Stop, so neither the new or old Vent
is 'exactly like a Leslie 122.' Initially, I was skeptical about the
stop-in-front, but have grown to really like it, because it eliminates
the occasional out-of-phase positions that drop out the bass or some of
the midrange. My solos are always spot-on with the new way. I've
noticed that some of the newest Leslie products support this method.

The random stop is kind of a neat thing -- most of the time. When it
stops in a position that doesn't detract from the tone, it adds a nice
bit of randomness to the sound. But when it stops in one of the 'bad'
positions -- and good/bad locations vary with the drawbar settings --
then the tone gets kind of odd and unpleasant. I can remember reaching
around an tweaking the horn more than a few times to fix this problem.

An old Vent can be upgraded to the new style, but not the other way
around. It takes a special tool, so not every dealer can do this for
you. (We can.)

Regards,

-BW
