Subject:Re: my thoughts after two gigs with my NUMA - sorry long note
The fact that O/D seems to differ on different NUMA's is interesting, I wonder if there are a couple of different OS versions out there...?
I played a NUMA Demo a few months back and I loved it (which is why I eventually bought mine) but it was quite noisy, and when I brought this to the attention of the distributor, they connected me with the engineering group and I quickly received a note from an engineer advising me that the noise floor was high by design to make it sound more realistic, but that they were dialing this down in the final version. And they did, because my new NUMA is very quiet. It was in that communication with the engineer that I got the impression that there are lots of hidden, and as yet undocumented, features built into the OS. Features that may be enabled by key/button combinations or perhaps via software..? I have high hopes that sometime soon we'll see a new NUMA OS and new features and/or more tweakable parameters.. No guarantees, just a feeling.
I also have to agree that this NUMA is pretty close to the perfect B3 clone, aside from the obvious differences that are going to exist in the interface given the fact that it's newer technology and we have to deal with MIDI, and we're adding split manuals etc.. However, in virtually every aspect that counts, this is pretty much the perfect single manual B3 clone. The things that count to me are the basic sound (tonewheel, C/V, Percussion, warmth, presence etc), the feel of the keyboard, the reverse presets, the drawbars, the quality of the leslie SIM, and the user interface. One could argue that it's not perfect because it doesn't use the same switches, or because the Ventilator might be a slight bit better leslie sim.. but the bottom line is, go plug this into a real leslie and I'll bet you agree it sounds and feels pretty perfect, and it's only 22 pounds and under 2 grand!
