Oh, and one more thing: A raw steel or aluminum plate is *cheaper* than
one with holes in it. They both start with the same amount of metal,
then the one with holes needs more processing. Theoretically, the
punched out material could be recycled into more sheets, but more often
than not it's either scrapped, or sold off for 5-10% of its nominal
value by weight.
When I buy PCBs, I get *charged* for each hole drilled or corner notched
out -- there's no credit for the cut material. The same is true for
non-rectangular PCBs: they're billed by the largest rectangular
dimensions, unless one can find a way to rotate them and interleave two
or more on a sheet of raw board.
