Subject:Re: Al Kooper
I bought the Scarbee KGB (Keyboard Gold Bundle, not the Russian
intelligence agency) a couple of years ago, and Kontakt 3. The KGB
includes a multisampled Pianet N. I only did some minor editing to
it (IIRC the key-release noise was cranked a bit high for my taste)
and it sounds super authentic. A few weeks ago I had 'She's not
there' and 'Tell her No' by the Zombies playing and I was playing
along with it. Tone-wise it was practically indistinguishable from
the orginal recording. I'll have to post a sample/link so you guys
can hear, soon. I was on a Pianet high, so to speak. I love that
sound, like I'm sure most of you all do. Simon's run-down list
( http://www.alphabeck.co.uk/hoep/whoplayed.html ) of electric pianos
in famous recordings says Pianet N was used on the Beatles' 'I Am the
Walrus'. I agree--that's what I hear. It sounds like a really beat
up, gritty Pianet though...I hear distortion, and maybe there's some
preamp 'crosstalk' happening. Listen to the version on 'Anthology 2'
and you'll especially hear what I'm talking about because I think the
effects are stripped away. I'm aware for the final mix/es they ran
it through a Leslie speaker plus who-knows-what other outboard gear
Abbey Road to get that chorusey/flanged effect (maybe some ADT?).
On my Kurzweil PC2r, I edited and made a 'User' preset version of
that sound. It comes (as a preset) on that module if you get the
Classic Keys expansion ROM (I believe programmer/keyboardist/Kurz
guru Dave Weiser programmed the majority of that ROM)... and I think
I've got it pretty close, or at least the overall 'vibe' of the
sound; we do that song in my cover band. Sidenote: I saw the Beatles
tribute band 'Rain' play live last year. Man, they had every single
sound nailed, the orchestral stuff especially like french horns
etc....definite ear-candy for any keyboardist in the crowd.

'yeah - the Zombies used one all the time - check out 'She's Not There'
and 'Tell Her No' - awesome. The Pianet N was going to be included in
the Nord electric piano library but never made it for some reason - a
real disappointment. I had a Pianet N during the '60's and loved it! '
