I think we have done only one completely without soundman. One way is to setup your base levels on the stage mixer and FOH mixer before the gig, and then everyone make sure NOT to change their instrument output levels, but to only adjust their levels with their individual monitor channel controls..if you arent loud enough for your taste, turn up your monitor level etc. The house mix stays the same. Usually there is a capable wife/ girlfriend/ musician at a gig that can push a fader up or down if need be.

Years ago I mixed our loud standard format rock band from my keyboard rig onstage. I used the FOH mix for my headphone feed. You make allowances for overrepresentation of the vocals and under for the guitars, after a while you can get the hang of a fairly balanced FOH mix. And since we had 2 guitars I would roam around the audience during a 'guitar song' to check on details. I think we had compressor/ limiters on the vocals and drums as well.

So for those of you who have switched to OEMs - what do you guys do for casuals and small bar gigs where there's no soundman?
