I hate it when cats hear better than I do….

Actually, about 10 years ago I went to an audiologist and she did a hearing test on me. She told me that I had the hearing of a 17 year old. I had no idea that she was talking about a 17 year old dog!

But seriously, my hearing is not bad. Especially considering I have been playing in bands since I was 15 years old. 40 years later… It’s amazing I can hear at all.

...I had a really strange thing happen about 4 years ago.  I went to a jam session of old buddies, and things were going really well...until...a somewhat inebriated guitar player showed up.   Well, he was not only playing thru a Marshall half-stack, but also brought a Leslie 147 and preamp to play out of.   As soon as he joined up, the volume doubled.  I asked him to turn his gear away from me and turn down..."sure dude...OK"....but nothing.  As I was about to threaten to leave if he didn't, a strange thing occured.  I LOST MY ABILITY TO DISCERN DIFFERENT PITCHES coming from my keyboards...it was all noise.   I immediately turned off my gear and packed up (as the inebriate was offering me a job in his blues band).
So, I immediately contacted a audiologist in my area.   It turns out that I overloaded the hairs in the cochlea (middle ear), and they were paralyzed for about 1/2 hour...hence the loss in ability to hear different pitches.   I have above average hearing in both ears up to 4500 Hz, then both ears drop off till about 6000 Hz (right where a female voices her consonants...go figure.  My wife still doesn't believe it !!).  And, I have constant tinnitus, where before it was only for about 10 seconds a week.   I really wish that I could go back in time and skip that jam session...or have been wearing the custom earfilters that the audiologist since has made for me !!
