One way to limited exposure to excess dB is to use inear monitors . I am
fortunate enough to be in a rock band with 5 others who agreed to try it,
and we love it now. Guitar players use processors to get their sounds, and
the drummer uses electronic drums, fed to a 16-in, 6 stereo pair-out Allen
Heath MixWizard. No stage monitors, no back line, no feedback, complete
control of your own mix. I was amazed at how fast we (especially the guitar
players) adapted.

It has been a problem playing with other traditional format bands since
then. One solution I have found is to bring along a small mixer, mikes to
put near each back line amp (or direct feed if you can get it), and an
attenuator to get a monitor and/or front of house feed, and have my own
controlled mix again. I bring a set of headset-type shooting ear protectors
for the times when the backline overwhelms the earbuds with noise. Not
ideal, but i decided a while back not to tolerate ringing ears after the gig
anymore.
