You know, what's really ironic is that neither the Hammond nor the
Leslie really became a church pipe or theater organ set up. Both took
on a life of their own even if Laurens Hammond fought Don Leslie's
invention till the day Laurens died. Other electronic organ makers
excelled in church, cathedral type venues and theaters although
Hammonds/Leslies found a home in COGIC ministry churches. Churches
large and able to afford the real thing or the electronic versions of a
pipe chose monster organs that had a closer pipe sound than a
Hammond/Leslie. Did Laurens/Don know their demographic? Or was it all
serendipitous?

I've heard the slow speed was to emulate the effect of a pipe organ in
which the sound comes from different physical locations as different
pipes sound.
