The tube AO-28 contributes significantly to the classic overdriven sound,
which is why it is a bad idea to yank one in good order.

However, the majority of the classic overdriven sound comes from the leslie
amp, so he should at least make sure that the output level of the preamp is
hot enough to drive the leslie into distortion.
