If early Hammonds never failed, why were people trained to repair them?

I have at least 50 books in my bookshelf that deal with product quality, failures, etc. I don't really have the time (or desire) to start quoting them. If you really think that the ONLY reason that products fail is due to inadequate testing, you clearly have a lot of homework to do.
