I do know that it is also used with piano at the very least and I don't know why it can't be used for any instrument. Of course other strings (Viola, cello etc.) are Suzuki instruments.

My son used to study in a "Suziki BASED" program that used the fundamental concept of the student mimicing the teacher by listening and watching. Strict Suzuki will not allow note reading but my kid's program included sight reading and improvisation and other styles to round out the program.

The Suzuki method is also called the "Mother Tongue" method because, with it, a child learns music the same way it learns to speak. In fact, I was told that in the strictest sense, the parent must also play (Violin, piano, or whatever), obviously, that would preclude far too many students(at least in my town) so in my son's program, the parent was the "coach" and only needed to sit in on lessons to take notes and subtly remind the student of critical points during daily practice.

Of course, all this was too tempting for me so I had to get my own cheap fiddle and fart around with it. I didn't get too far but my son quit years ago and I still play to amuse myself. (BTW, no one else is amused: )

Cheers,
Rock

Oh, one more thing FWIW: The name Suzuki in Japanese translates to "Smith" i.e. one the most common names and being so, pretty much all the companies in Japan with the name Suzuki are unrelated, at least that's what I've bee led to believe.
