Japanese students who study abroad may be creative, that's usually
the reason why they study out of Japan. Japanese education system is
based on memorizing, copying teacher and mechanical drill. This has
deep historical reasons and tradition, and traditional music, tea
ceremony, ikebana or martial arts are studied same way. Therefore it
can't satisfy really creative people and develop their creativity.

There are more attitudes to the improvisation, and I wouldn't say
precision is so much necessary if you mean technique precision, skill
in performing instrument. We can improvise with claves, or snare drum
only, and it's enough for really creative person. It's not necessary
to use melody, harmony, counterpoint... We can improvise on one
chord, or with two alternating notes only, and it can be very
creative. Creative improvisation is possible on any technical and
music theory knowledge level. It's just the thing of method, and
attitude.

I'm sure Japanese can focus, and concentrate quite well. This is
another part of their mentality based on zen. We can learn a lot from
them, which I do every day :-)
