Unfortunately the only way that I have found to evaluate speakers effectively is to use them in a live setting simlilar to the application for which they are intended. There are very few music stores that will let you play loud enough to simulate most band situations, and just try to get the sense of how a speaker sounds at low volumes with the shred nazis and animal drummers in the rest of the store. Some mail order houses have generous return policies that , if timed right, may allow you to get the gear to an actual gig. Other than that, for me it has been buy, use for a while, get sick of the compromises, buy the next "big thing" and put the old stuff up on ebay. Of course I have lost a few $$ but fortunately I have not been burned too badly. Unfortunately most folks who gig for a living cannot afford that strategy.

Every crossover point is a potential point of distortion and phase issues. An electronic crossover can regain some efficiency and
generally provide a cleaner sound when good components are used. The newer powered speakers from QSC, EV, and others
are hard to beat. Since in a well-designed speaker system you should not hear the crossover points 2 or 3 way makes little difference
and in fact the fewer crossover points the better.....unless you are trying to "create" as opposed to "reproduce" sound in which case
you can use a guitar cabinet if that's the sound you're going for. If you have any doubt about what you want, make sure you "try before
you buy" to make sure you get the sound you are after. Any good music store will let you hook up your gear to try out speakers and that
way you know what you are getting.

3 way speakers are a real step in the right direction. The sound will be ton's better then keyboard amps. Our own speakers are based on that concept. But we use a very refined crossover designed for keyboards. Commercial versions will leave a bit of tone on the table yet....

I'm playing with a Korg cx3 and Studiologic controller with a motif rack. I've been using a Roland kc500, but am not really happy with the sound or the power (150w). I have a Mackie 808 power mixer head and am looking for a speaker to use with it. I like the idea of a 3 way speaker for better clarity of the keyboard sounds, and Carvin seems to be the only company that makes this kind of cabinet (15inch woofer, 6 inch mid, 1 1/2 inch tweeter). Carvin offers a wooden cab (wood is poplar) and a neodymium speaker/plastic cab. Anyone have any experience with this kind of set up or with Carvin speakers specifically.
