That is because it is a simulation of a properly (traditionally) mic'd 122 Leslie. Think about it...if you are
going to amplify your Leslie you need to use mic's. Every Leslie you ever heard that was recorded or
live through a PA system was mic.d.....so it makes perfect sense to include this in the "model".
Like it says on the Ashby Solutions site :

"The NEO Instruments Ventilator(tm) simulates a famous Model 122 rotary speaker cabinet,
mic'ed up with a stereo pair on top for the treble horn, and a single mono mic below for the drum holding the woofer."

When you are monitoring in stereo I find, like you said, that speaker placement is important.
Very often "sound guys" tend to over Eq or poorly mic the leslie. Also many PA and monitor system
are not very good at reproducing high quality balanced sound either by poor design or poor set up.

Subject: [CWSG] Ventilator Heresy?

I've read a lot here about the sound of the Ventilator being the sound
of a mic'ed Leslie. I, for one, find the sound of the Vent to be very
much like an actual Leslie in a room. I play my XK1 or C1 or E3 through
it into a pair of JBL Eon 315 and it really sounds like an actual Leslie
in the room to me. Part of that is my speaker placement - I don't have
the sound traveling from one side of the room to the other, but I think
a big part of it is the way the Vent recreates the very distinctive
tonal quality of the Leslie's speakers and cabinet. In my experience a
lot of that is lost when the sound guy (or gal) crams a few mics as
close as humanly possible to the rotors. That's great for making it
loud, but a lot of that distinctive sound is lost. Not so with the Vent
- when I'm playing out, it doesn't sound like a mic'ed Leslie, it sounds
like a very, very loud Leslie cabinet!
