tonysounds was exactly right -- different applications have different speaker needs. Some applications (like PA synthesizer, piano) demand a full-range, low-color sound reproduction. For other applications, like guitar and I would argue, organ, color from the amp and speaker are part of what we accept as the definitive sound of the instrument. Run some pre-recorded material through a Marshall amp or run a guitar straight into a PA, for a demonstration of what I mean.

For that reason, I think we really need to define the application we're talking about, before any kind of meaningful rules of thumb can be made.
