Marantz and Denon have also lost the status they once had. Marantz was taken
over by Superscope (Sony) at one point
and the last time I purchased a Denon product I was very disappointed. The
market had changed for these type products
and it's just not cost effective to build as in the old days. However
technology has brought the costs down so producing
"good specs" is not a big deal. I've got to admit my old tube McIntosh
equipment is in storage these days (Hey, no remote control
what can you do!) :)

Actually Altec had and has progressed extensively from the old A7's. The
Altec that we knew and loved is now Great Plains Audio. Bill Hanachuck from
original Altec is owner of the new company. They have exact replacement
parts for most all Altec stuff ever sold. There has been much advancement in
driver technology since the old days along with cabinet CADCAM design and
improved crossovers. They are not in the musicians world anymore but make
installed equipment etc, the match for anything available today.

As far as McIntosh, the deal with Clarion was short lived. They are now part
of DM Holdings which has McIntosh,Marantz, Denon. They are back big time in
high end and cinema. They still make tube and SS amps. The big one has
autoformers and is a 2000 watt monoblock.
