Lots of good points. I would just add that Sonar didn't work out for me. The learning curve for a beginner is a bit steep and it is not
very user-friendly.
Cubase LE is another possibility and is sometimes bundled. I would also recommend one of those Idiot books on vst to a beginner (this idiot could have saved a lot of time).
