This is a quality control issue with the parts supplier or manufacturing process. The problem seems to be inconsistent and if they are using a noise
gate then they ~usually~ either stick on or off rather than give differing amounts of noise like has been reported. Are these units being manufactured
in a 3rd world country? I know they are trying to compete in the lower priced market but this kind of thing can kill a product. I still love my XK-3c though
and it has never given me any problems ....neither did my original XK-3 for that matter. I hope they wake up and take care of this....good luck!

So I received an email from my dealer, and apparently he received a response from Hammond regarding the excessive hiss in my brand new Hammond SK1. The response from Hammond was...

They recognize that some units are exhibiting more hiss than others, due to the operation of the noise gate, and while they feel that this is a "negligable problem" they are prepared to replace my SK1 with a unit that exhibits no hiss. Unfortunately they are closing for the holidays, and this will not be resolved until sometime in the new year.

I can only assume that the quality problems with the SK1's are so bad that they couldn't simply go out back and ship a replacement to me today... they're actually going to have to find one that works, and that's going to take until the new year..
