So I received an email from my dealer, and apparently he received a response from Hammond regarding the excessive hiss in my brand new Hammond SK1. The response from Hammond was...
They recognize that some units are exhibiting more hiss than others, due to the operation of the noise gate, and while they feel that this is a "negligable problem" they are prepared to replace my SK1 with a unit that exhibits no hiss. Unfortunately they are closing for the holidays, and this will not be resolved until sometime in the new year.
I can only assume that the quality problems with the SK1's are so bad that they couldn't simply go out back and ship a replacement to me today... they're actually going to have to find one that works, and that's going to take until the new year..
