James,
First let me give you a little background so that you get a feel for what I like, and what I've been looking for.
I admit it … I'm SPOILED from years of gigging with a real B3/Leslie, a real grand piano, a real Rhodes, a real clav etc. Fortunately, at this stage of my life, I really don't NEED to play any gigs, and if I can't enjoy the music I'm playing, AND the sound and feel of the instruments I'm using… I'd rather stay home.
Also, I move all of my own equipment these days, so my goal has been to find a rig that is as lightweight and portable as possible without sacrificing sound or "feel" (the fun factor). One rig that I had that I liked was an XK-3 and Yamaha S90 ES through a Bose system. There were things that I didn't care for about the XK-3 though, and I didn't care much for the Yamaha action, and it was just weighed too much.
Then I picked up a Nord Stage, and ran it through a pair of Behringer B212A speakers. Then I went to a Spacestation SFX MkII, then a JBL PRX-212 system, then a pair of QSC K10s. I still didn't care much for the sound of the piano, and still preferred the S90 ES pianos, EPs & clavs (just my preference). I also bought a Nord C1 (which I like a lot). I tried a variety of processors, preamps (tube/solid state) etc. etc., and any time I'd get close to a piano sound that was tolerable, the organ sound would suffer, and vice versa.
Recently, I have been using a Numa organ & Numa piano, and have been playing them through my PRX-212 & a QSC K8. The sound was excellent, but the speakers are optimized for vocals (crisp highs), so the top 3 notes of the Numa organ were a little `screechy'. Actually, it really wasn't that bad at all, I'm just REAL picky. Through these speakers, the piano sound "in the mix" cut really well on gigs, but for solo work, it lacked a little warmth.
The other day I was cleaning my studio and was thinking about getting rid of some stuff that I hadn't used in years. Just to make sure they both still worked, I hooked up the SFX MkII using a Behringer B212 as a `sub', and quite by accident, found exactly the sound I'd been looking for!! Nice `natural' sounding grand piano, a Rhodes sound that sounds incredibly close to my suitcase Rhodes (with those sweet mids), and a clav sound that's just flat out fun to play, and the Organ is fat and full through the entire range with NO screech at all. Yeah, yeah … I know … Behringer!! LOL
I haven't gigged yet with this particular configuration of gear, so I really don't know how well it's going to work for me in a `live' (moderately loud) setting, but at low and moderate volumes, the combination is heaven.
