Subject:Re: HUSH - change of pace-JL solos
"3. Sometimes if I like the artist, and I kind of like solo, I will just pick out the signature passages and use them for ins/outs and then improvise around them. For me, I often put Jon Lords solos in this category. I have always found his solos (style/technique) to be a little weird and sometimes I like to do my own thing."
Craig,
Interesting and possibly not coincidentally, you put JL in this third category. JL has mentioned in interviews, one of his goals, when soloing, was(is)to strive for something unique. I'm para-phrasing here and I can't remember his exact words but if you listen to his live solos, he rarely if ever plays the same solo twice. I think you have to believe this is intentional on his part. I'm pretty sure that's where all that "weird" stuff comes from. Sometimes it works.
Cheers,
