Something similar happened with me. When I was 18 I bought my first keyboard, a Hohner Pianet T, and a Roland Cube 60 bass amp (I play bass as well as keyboards, and if I recall, keyboard Cubes weren't available at the time). I also got an ElectroHarmonix Small Stone phaser shortly afterwards, but I soon realised that songs like "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Green Onions" didn't sound quite right on electric piano. I wasn't sure what to do (I even considered getting a Stylophone, but that would have to wait another thirty years...) The following year I worked all summer (making fruit pies in a supermarket bakery) and earned enough money to buy a brand-new Casiotone 202 which had organ sounds, synth-ish sounds and even a nice smooth string sound if you put it through a chorus pedal. Those two keyboards plus two ElectroHarmonix pedals formed the basis of my keyboard rig for the next 8 years, supplemented in 1985 by a Casio CZ-101. Of course I still use Casio instruments...

The ARP Pro Soloist was possibly what brought on my first case of G.A.S. At the time I was playing a Wurly and I needed just that one more keyboard to allow me to play solos using various instruments and, as I recall, the sounds out of the ARP were quite authentic. At that time i couldn't afford it and settled for a second hand MiniKorg. That was my first synthesizer.Peter

If you were ever a Genesis fan, you heard it often back in the day.
