I think Medeski uses both actually, the new and the old. I watched a ton of youtubes, and there were a few where he used the digital one (Kids show at some book store, and also vids from the box set's DVD show him using a dig one down wherever they were at a radio station).I've also seen clips fairly recent of him using an older one, again, in a foreign country, maybe something to do with backline over there? I thought he sounded more like his hammond sound with the new digital actually, he tends to use the upper drawbars a lot and goes for a brighter sound when he's on hammond, and the digital seems to catch that better, although it's obviously the analog on "it's a jungle in here". I've never seen a youtube or heard of anybody hearing him live where he didn't go through a leslie though.
Also, I know Brian Charette (sp?) that plays with Sheryl Bailee was using an old analog, and went to the new digital (look up Manic Depression - Jazz Guitars Meet Hendrix on youtube to hear him). Live there's just a lot of convenient features on the new one that aren't there for the old one.
I have both CX's here, and to me the new one is just way more versatile. The old one seems to have more one sound (although it's a great warm sound) where the new one can sound like a ton of different organs. Also, the old one's usable range is more toward the middle of the keyboard, the bass is almost nonexistant, where the new one got quite a bit of balls there. The upper end of the keyboard is really shrill on the old one, and just not there. The new one isn't great up there either, but a lot better in my opinion. And actually the more I tweak my new one, the more happy I am with it.But again, that's using both through a real leslie. But I still fire the old one up quite a bit just to mess with.
I did a demo comparing the old and new as close as I could straight into the board (all distortion is from the organs, not the recording end) if you're interested in hearing the difference. It's at http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=8017958 Maybe I need to do one with both through a leslie. Well, enough about old Korgs, I'm obviously obsessed with the things!
