The AMA is really for organ clones because half of it is essentially a Leslie amp; a piano through that would sound okay, but the amp side would have to be totally down.
For piano and any other sample-based sounds (strings, horns, etc.), it's better to get a pedal preamp or the black-face two-channel Vintage Tube Pre. That will warm up the sound and expose nuances in a piano sample like nothing else, but won't overdrive the signal.
For synths, it's either/or. If you're into pretty, glassy DX-type sounds, the Vintage Tube Pre is fantastic; if you're into grungy, fat synth sounds, running any synth through an AMA is a religious experience. Played a Nord Lead 3 through an AMA for about an hour around 18 months ago and needed a cigarette afterwords ...
