Subject:Re: OT JBL vs QSC

I just purchased the new JBL Eon 515 XT. It replaced my old Eon 15G2. I had thought correctly or incorrectly that my old Eon was too muddy in the middle frequencies with my Yamaha S-90 when playing piano patches. On the other hand, I thought my Hammond XK-1 sounded really good through it. Since my band regularly hires sound companies and runs my boards through the FOH, I am not sure it mattered to anyone but me. It is more about stage volume which sometimes gets loud with three guitar players and a driving bass player.

Weight did matter. Carrying the old Eon G2 was not good on my back. The new Eon is 14 pounds lighter and easy to carry in one hand. It is ergonomically easier to carry.

Just as importantly,it has three inputs which can come in handy. In my first gig with my new Eon, the sound company ran out of monitors and we had to start, leaving me as the only band member without a monitor in an acoustically challenged room. They were able to run a TRS cable into my Eon to give me a monitor mix of the whole band on one of the channels, which allowed me to control the band mix volume versus the volume of my boards regardless of what was coming out of the FOH. It worked fairly well.

Having a three input mixer built into the powered speaker is nice. My goal these days is to simplify and lighten my rig. I don't really want to bring a separate mixer to the gig.

I know everyone talks about playing in stereo. My band won't let me and tell me that stereo playing live is a bunch of BS and that no one can hear the stereo separation in any event
.
So, at least for me, one light powered speaker with three inputs is not a bad way to go.

In addition, I have started running a hot spot Galaxy monitor off of the new Eon to give me up close and personal monitoring. The Eon sits on a pole and the sound goes out above my head for the most part. The hot spot is loud and perfect for monitoring. The Hot Spot monitor is so small, it almost fits in my glove box but pumps out 170 watts. In fact, it is too loud. I barely turn it up.

My two cents.

Rick
