Subject:Re: Hammond SK1 & SK2 - slightly OT
I concur with Scott regarding the CX-3...tried every clone out there and the only one i could get to sound acceptable at the time was the Korg...this was pre-Numa and I have not had a chance to A/B any of my axes with a Numa. I can, however, compare my CX-3 to the XK-3c...which is what I play at church three services a week.
While I can say that the Hammond is a thoroughly bitchin' axe, I was able to tweak my CX-3 to emulate my '65 B-3 much more accurately, with the speaker simulator off and running it through the B-3's AO28 preamp and a 122. I have been able to bring the XK-3c fairly close to my '56 C-3 (which is in drastic need of a re-tube) in a similar fashion, but still not close enough to fool me in a blind test using the C-3's preamp and the same Leslie 122, and certainly not anywhere close to my '65 B!
I'm not quite certain why I can't get the XK-3c's parameters tweaked into true tonewheel emulation suggesting any of my classic Hammonds, but I'm guessing the Korg modeling algorithms are probably superior. After all, Korg has been doing physical modeling much longer than HS (or just about anyone else around, for that matter). I'm guessing that they're simply better at it, despite having discontinued their clonewheel organ line.
Best,
