Subject:Re: Best Vibrato/Chorus scanner emulation on a clonewheel....
Thanks for the insight. I knew that the scanner has its exact place in the signal path, so an external box won't do the tick. I think there are just two possibilities:
1) an upgrade kit (circuit boards, cables etc.) which needs to be build inside the organ
2) a box which goes between the output and the extrenal leslie(sim) that box also contains a real good percussion section and preamp tubes The only remaining problem is: how will that box steal the 1" drawbar key contact when perc. is on? Perhaps that upgrade kit would be the best (and of course: it is recommended installing after warranty has expired :-) ).
I am a gospel player, so I rarely use percussion, but I use a lod of C-2 (which sounds bad on the XK-3, but C-3 sounds unusable) You need the scanner chorus for maximum intensity. Also: the effect is marvelous when the lslie slown down, and the scanner chorus seems to come in from (underneath) since it is a little cancelled out when the leslie is on temolo.
I suppose that this topic hasn't ben addressed (perhaps) because many of the younger Hammond players never heard a great C-3 setting on a vintage console...
It's also a wonderful effect to just lay down chords in a band, an on a more quiet part you take out the C-3. So the Hammond will sound smooth and silky again. C-3 adds that "shimmer" and a second means to animate the sound. Yep, I'd bite the bullet and buy any kind of upgrade kit for hammond clones containing a real decent scanner sim. Can't be that hard to do.
Regarding clones in general: since we live in a commercial system, I am positive that manufacturers are almost always always holding back, so they make sure they can have "big improvements" in the next model.....
Check software like that from "Audio Ease": these guys can emulate any (!) existing reverb, speaker, microphone, radio, cell phone, you name it. I heard their stuff: it is simply awesome! I am sure these people would answer the question: "could you make a Hammond scanner emulation?" with" Sure, which exact model?". Just wanted to bring up the point that ther is NO technical linitation. If a clone has a bad scanner emulation, someone was holding back or cutting corners.

Basically a scanner in a box will not really work.
Why?
Because the scanner has to come BEFORE the percussion in the signal path. I
have heard a Hammond CV with a Trek percussion unit and it sounded like
crap when the percussion also had chorus vibrato. Very strange.
That straight percussion ( no vibrato ) mixed with chorus vibrato on the
drawbar tones is what gives a Hammond 3 series a big part of its magic.
I am surprised that there isn't more discussion about clone chorus vibrato,
but then again a lot of players don't use it and don't really care. As far
as I am concerned improved C/V is one of the few reasons to upgrade any
clone.
The other thing on my personal; wish list - I would like to see PERCUSSION
VOLUME on the adjustment panel of all clones.
