Subject:Re: SPEAKING OF JON LORD
Hi All,
In answer to the original question ...
As mentioned, by the time Deep Purple got to Machine Head -- which was
their 5th or 6th album, by the way -- the organ was being sent to a
Marshall amp, and later, Acoustic amps (the company; not acoustic guitar
amplification). To get the Jon Lord sound out of a Leslie or
Ventilator, you need to muck with the tone and add a LOT of overdrive.
Boost the midrange at least 6dB, maybe more, and use whatever onboard
distortion is available in your clone to add to the grind. Roll off the
bass to taste. You may have to roll the treble off a little to ward off
the 'fizzy' sound that most clones' internal distortion makes.
Also, remember that at those levels of drive, the subharmonic drawbars
tend to really create a lot of intermodulation, so a setting like 57
8884 468 is probably better than using say, 88 8884 468.
Regards,
-BW
