Then you're doing it backwards. Its the amp or in most cases the Leslie
that's supposed to go into overdrive. And on some recordings it's the
21H that is the Leslie amp of choice which is only 20 watts and easier
to overdrive. That having been said, I don't like the way the 8M tries
to overdrive either which is why I don't use that feature and keep it
clean. Yet the overdrive is on the "amp" section of the 8M which is not
an amp stage at all. I over drive the amp by using a preamp in between
the 8M and the Leslie's amp. Not really "the" ideal way but when you're
dealing with 1/4" output clones, unless you use a Leslie combo pedal to
where you can drive the leslie amp or a preamp as in my case, for those
of you that can haul more gear, its the overdrive on the keyboard that
gets the job which is not really the ideal way. You have to consider
the designers of these clones decided for themselves that adding an
overdrive circuit was a good thing, so it not sounding good is no
surprise. On a real B you can't overdrive the preamp in the organ at
all although you can turn it up some. So clone designers who happen to
also be guitar FX makers, Roland=Boss=every distortion pedal you can
think of, did their own thing. A stylized approach that does not work
to a classic Hammondista. Then again you can never get everything you
want in one unit. I had a Cx3, one of the first ones. It was okay for
being portable and for the gig I was doing left the B3/122 at home. I
used the 8M on a gig once and I must say it fairs better in the studio
as I keep looking for the beast to jump out and it never does. Maybe
with the new Vent it might but I have never tried one. Perhaps the
overdrive in the 8M could be improved with a Boss pedal. Which one, I
don't know but then you're hauling too much stuff. Good you have your
Cx3.

Errr,
I _like_ a hard overdriven sound (one that I can use with full and even
complex chords) and the CX-3 gives me that. I don't have (or want) any
external (tube) amp or leslie, my CX-3 goes straight into the PA or
studio monitors and I don't want a clean sound most of the time.
I couldn't be bothered to haul around that extra stuff (I have plenty
to haul around as it is) so I need a good sim that gives me what I want
(see above). The CX-3 does, the VK8m and most other amp and leslie sims
like that of the VK8 don't. Not driving the VK8 amp hard is not going
to give me the sound that _I_ want.
