Just to further clarify if you didn't get it from the context, but the quarterback is the key player who leads the team and calls pre-rehearsed plays during the offensive parts of the game. If the team lost, it's often the quarterbacks fault so he's the guy everyone thinks they could have done better than.

I'm not much of a sports fan either, but some of this stuff we yanks can't help but know a of little.
