Hi,
I think I was the 'someone who said it,' but I think we've lost
something in the translation. (It demonstrates how easy it is to
interpret something two ways.) Let me start over ...
The Ventilator *simulates* the sound of three mics on a Leslie 122. The
industry standard for mic'ing a Leslie has been a pair of good dynamic
mics (ex: Shure SM57) on the horn, on on each side; and a
large-diaphragm 'broadcast' mic like the ones Sennheiser, EV, and Heil
make on the drum. There's no big gain to using two mics on the drum,
because the sound of the low notes isn't very directional.
The Ventilator, though, doesn't have real mics; all the simulation is
digital (DSP). It shows how far digital simulation has come in the past
few years, and it's a tribute to the brains and perseverance of the
designer, Guido Kirsch. The Ventilator is about the size of a big
guitarist's "stomp box," so there isn't any possibility of putting a
spinning horn and mics inside. ;-)
What I was trying to explain was that the Ventilator in mono is
analogous to a real mic'ed Leslie in mono. A Leslie with three mics
sounds excellent. But removing the 2nd horn mic, while a little less
impressive, still sounds 'like a Leslie,' and is still better than most
simulators in stereo. The Ventilator has closed the gap quite a bit,
because the Ventilator in mono, like the Leslie it imitates, is still
way better than most of its competition in stereo, IMHO.
