Subject: [CWSG] Re: Rig Suggestions ??? Yamaha P-85/ P-95 (Tone on a Budget)

If you are trying to add just acoustic piano , may I chime in with one
suggestion?

For much less than the price of a module , consider the Yamaha P-85.
These are currently being blown out for under 500 dollars by various music
stores because the new Yamaha piano line is due out in June.

The new P-95 will also be out in June but I am not sure that it is going to
be all that different from the P-85. The internal speakers may be the big
change on this.

I have to speak out about how much I like the P-85 GRAND PIANO 2 setting. I
think this is one of the great overlooked sounds out there. To me , it
sounds quite a bit like the Grand Piano 2 on the CP33 , with only some slight
differences in the upper 2 octaves - but it is not that much different.

On the newer Yamahas, I generally prefer the "alternative " grand piano
sample. Piano 1 usually sounds " plunky" in the mid range to me. The glaring
example of this is to be found in the Yamaha P-80 / P-90 samples and in most
of the recent Casios. I just can't seem to get past it.

The P-85 action took some getting used to for me, but now I like it. It is
less "bouncy" and it is a little stiffer than the CP33/ P-90 action. But
what I really like, besides the Grand Piano 2 sample is the 24 pound weight
of the whole keyboard.

The Grand Piano 2 sample may sound a bit under impressive when heard
through headphones or the tiny P-85 speakers, but when it is run through a good
stereo amp it is hard to beat. I fact it is so hard to beat that I am not
sure I have heard another Yamaha sample that really tops it . Until the new
stuff from Yamaha comes out, it really is in the best buy category right now.
