Subject:Re: Motion Sound KBRM
I bought an original Motion Sound KBRM when they first came out. it was OK... but there have been a few recommended 'mods' on the motion sound website to make it much better. first of all, I changed out the 12ax7 preamp tube to a lesser gain 12at7 or 12au7 (I can't remember which one I left in there). this made the biggest difference .. giving up some gain for a better over-drive sound (less 'over the wall' ). you can try a bunch of different 12ax7s or even a JJ / Tesla ECC832 / 12DW7 (with one half of a 12AX7 and one half of a 12AU7 in the same envelope) and 'suit to taste'. there was also a mod that recommended removing the little deflector piece from the horn - this was good too. additionally, there was a mod recommended for more bass (which I also did) by cutting the length of the inside cabinet port tube down to a shorter length - again, an improvement. you could probably also change the entire character of the box by changing out the 12" speaker, but the one that's in there (can't remember - might be an eminence) is fairly decent. all in all, there's probably no other similar solution on the market right now (never was?) that does exactly what this thing does for it's weight & size considering the separate additional channels for regular keyboard inputs (like getting a free built-in mixer) as well as having a real spinning horn. [you can even adjust the spin times of the unit via the 3 internal speed pots]. lastly, they already have an sm-57 mic capsule mounted in there for external amplification. so like I said, there's nothing quite like it that I know of as far as features vs portability is concerned. now, is it gonna sound like a big 122/ 147? .. nope, because it's nowhere near that size and weight of a box and that wasn't the primary intent.. the idea was to have a real spinning horn with a tube-based front end channel and a mixer that could also provide some additional regular clean solid-state channels for keyboard/piano etc, as well as the internal mic feature.. (and here's the kicker).. that you can just throw into the backseat or trunk of your car by yourself.. that what this thing is all about.
incidentally, I don't use mine anymore (so it's up for sale) in my current band (playing more guitar lately) and had promised a demo of it to a (long island) gentleman on this list - so if you're reading this post, then yes, I've pulled it out now, but with all the snow & work lately, I just haven't had a free moment to email you .. but I will.. or if you see this, then just shoot me off an email and I'll try to speed it up.
thanx,
m

Subject: [CWSG] Motion Sound KBRM
Howdy y'all,
I'm a brand new member here, I just bought myself a used Motion Sound KBRM and I'm not all that thrilled with it. Anybody have any opinions on this amp?
Thanks in advance,
abc_actor
