Subject:Re: VK8m tone control/ How did I miss this thing?
I am glad to see a bit of discussion open up about the Rolands. I still
haven't heard the new V combo V -700.
However, I notice that Roland not only has continued to carry the VK8m, but
the new Musicians Friend price has now increased to $1499.99 !!!
I have seen them go for 5 or 600 dollars on E bay and Craigslist though .
I played my VK8m through leslies for the past 4 years or so and it is only
since the Ventilator came out that I have gotten serious about adjusting
the sim. I wanted to make sure that I really needed a Ventilator.
At this point I am not sure I need it. I played around with mic distancing
and chorale speeds and then finally I made the discovery with the tone
knob. I boost lows at about + 2, set the mids flat and the highs at -2. I
usually run amp modeling 1 with about 2 o'clock on the overdrive setting,
unless I use 808000000 .... then I use amp 4 with overdrive all the way down.
I back off the mic distance on the lower rotor to minimize "warbling "in
the bass on fast speed. This in combination with the tone knob on 2 o'clock
bright gives a very authentic fast leslie effect in stereo
The overdrive knob on amp 1 seems to boost bass and cut highs more than it
does overdrive. I use it a lot to fatten the tone, which was one of the
original complaints about this unit. I find I can get it as "fat" as I want!
For close to the price of a Ventilator you can pick up a VK8m . The chorus
vibrato alone is worth that to me.
I do think that the sim needs to be run in stereo however. But so do most
digital pianos.
