I own a VK-88 and agree with your comments. Although I prefer using it through my Vent or a real Leslie, before having the Vent I played many many gigs with it running directly to the main board. If the sound engineer is good you'll get a very convincing Leslie sim effect.

It does sound better with the tone knob at 2 o'clock on the "bright" side. You can always go into the EQ setting and work around with it so it doesn't sound too bright. This works either with the Leslie, the Vent, or straight out. You do have to work with the mic placement, upper and lower rotor volumes and eq. to get it going. But after all it's a matter of each individual's taste.

My only complaint with the VK-88 is that it is too heavy.

I agree that the simulator in the VK8m is under-rated. About a month ago, I saw a band at a club, and thought the guy had a really nice Leslie sounds. I went up to him after the set and asked him what he was using... just a stock VK8m. That's not to say that it might not be that much better with a Ventilator, but the Roland is really not bad at all.

I do think that often, when someone says that they played something and weren't impressed, you have to allow for the fact that they didn't necessarily take the time to learn the piece and how it might be able to be tweaked to their liking... they may just be playing it at however it happened to be set up at the store or in someone else's rig.
