Subject:VK8m tone control/ How did I miss this thing?
After the Ventillator came out I decided to do some serious re programming
of my Roland VK8m. I had also heard the Key B leslie sim and was mightily
impressed. So I decided to spend a little bit more time programming the sim
on the VK8m.
There is one thing about the tone control on the VK8m that threw me. On the
right side of the tone dial it says"bright" . On the left side it says
"fat". My assumption now is that this is an English interpretation of a
Japanese description.
For the past couple years I did not do much with the sim because I had
been using a real leslie.I had avoided using anything that would add
"brightness" to this thing for the longest time.
Wrong.
What the brightness knob does is add PRESENCE to the leslie sim. To me, it
makes the sim sound less muffled actually. It opens it up more, and makes
it sound less "phasey".
It also helps the chorus vibrato/ third percussion combination.
I had been running the tone control flat all this time. That tone control
on 2 o'clock toward the brightness side makes a heck of a lot of difference
in helping the sim sound VERY authentic.
I am in no hurry to get a Ventillator at this point after what I am
finding. I also cannot do without the stereo effect that the VK8m sim gives me.
I have had this thing for 4 years now, and it continues to amaze me. I
still think it has the best on board sim available in the U.S. market at this
time. And the best chorus vibrato. Nord comes close, but because of the
tweakability the VK8m isn't going anywhere.
