The new ZOOM H4n is almost perfect for your needs. I used the previous H4
version for a few years - it finally died after 200 gigs. Zoom gave me a
credit on the newer version. The newer H4n is a significant improvement in
operation and build. Although never used, I believe the H4n allows
recordings to be slowed down. I have the capability to professionally
record each gig using a mobile prototools rig - unless the recording is to
be released, I am very pleased with the ZOOM recording. The big trick is
recorder location - I hang the recorder somewhat near the P.A. cabs yet
close enough to the band to get a mostly "roomless" recording. The vocals
sound much better with the recorder getting more of a "clean" sound from the
P.A.. The band with a little "room" actually adds life. In summary - if
the vocal sounds roomy - the recording will sound cheap. Go for the best
vocal sound and fudge the recorder location to get the best band mix
secondarily.
Biggest drawback - lack of sleep. Get home from a late gig - then spent the
next three hours listening. Great humbling and learning tool.
If you choose this product, I would be pleased to offer any assistance
The H4n - you will be pleased with the results. Other products may perform
equally well or better - I have no experience with these.
