Subject:Re: Cables (OT-sort of)

Yeah,

I think the whole cable quality thing has spun out of control over the years with all the snake oil that they must use in them. I once needed a 12' RCA to RCA line cable to run a consumer subwoofer I had just purchased for under $100 and the salesman tried to sell me a cable for about $50 claiming and regular cheap cable would not handle the extreme LF response. REALLY? I don't think so, at line level and impedance?

But when Monster Cable first came on the scene, I'm pretty sure their product was limited to speaker cable, and I agree that you do need a minimum gauge at a given length to optimize, or at least not to degrade the damping factor of your amp. IMHO, that's a valid argument. Skin effect and oxygen free are where the issue IMHO, starts to get cloudy even though they may be based on solid principles, I'm not sure how much they really improve the sound but that's just my opinion from what I can hear (which is measurably less than it used to be; rolls off steeply at about 11-12K).

So at least I agree, pushing speaker cable customers to larger gauge is good advice but I think that was the jumping off point unrealistic claims and so on.

Cheers,
Rock
