Subject:Re: cheap dual-manual controller
Josh,
I scrounged an old Ultimate Support Systems 2-tier A-Frame keyboard stand (you know, the kind from the 80's) off of Craigslist for $40. Then I set up my 80's vintage Korg DW-8000 right underneath my Hammond XK-3. I only use the Korg as a MIDI controller, not for any other sounds (at this point in time) so I don't need access to the operating panel of the DW-8000. The XK-3 is nice and slim beneath the keybed, so the DW-8000 can get right up underneath it. Not quite as good as a Hammond XLK-3 lower manual, but it was about $1100 cheaper!!! I tried this with the Korg CX-3 I owned before the Hammond XK-3, and it didn't work as well - the Korg CX-3 is "fatter" under the keybed and you can't get a lower manual up as tight under the CX-3 as with the XK-3.
Another really nice thing about the A-frams stand is that I can also fit a set of MIDI bass pedals right underneath, where they "belong". Can't do that with an "X-stand".
Personally I don't need waterfall keys for the lower keyboard, so this setup works great for me.
By the way, I can afford to buy an XLK-3 whenever I'm ready to do so, but so far I haven't been motivated to spend the money yet.
Good luck. Don't let anybody talk you out of trying what you're thinking of.
Lou
