Subject: [CWSG] Ventura TX5
I have started using my Ventura TX5 with my band Skunk City, and have been extraordinarily pleased with the results! I’ve been using an XM2/Ventilator set-up with my midi rig, but for this band, I’m experimenting with just using organ, and nothing else. That’s going to be a tough call long-term, but so far, it’s proven to be a lot of fun. We have a very retro Steppenwolf/VanillaFudge kind of approach. The bassist uses the Acoustic 360 he’s had since 1976 (?!), and the guitarist is a LesPaul/tube amp guy, and the repertoire really focuses on that late 60s/70s era of music. We do things like very early Santana, very early Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, War, Beatles (but “Skunked”, harder sounding), and now Moody Blues and King Crimson (with lots of hard organ replacing mellotron). I’m using the TX5s sim (no Ventilator or Speakeasy rockbox), and it really does spank! It’s got nice big rock tone, and does a really killer jazz
organ sound (which I’m using a lot of with this band now), and just is so easy to play. Since we rehearse down a flight of stairs, the 20lbs is a nice feature as well. My only real quibble is that I haven’t learned the layout of all the buttons yet, and in a not-so-well lit rehearsal space, I’m not as sharp as I want to be yet on “where’s the….”. And since there are more buttons and controls than usual, I need to spend a little time with it to be able to instinctively grab what I want button-wise. But that would be true for any instrument. All in all, this axe has a real natural vibe to it that is very inspiring to play! I’m looking forward to the Epoch!
