Subject:OT - help - lowering mic sensitivity recording your band on a digital camera

A problem encountering recording live music on a digital camera or handicam is that the loud sounds of the band overload and thus distort in the recording. This happens even when reducing the sensitivity as much as possible with the camera's menu settings.
I have a Canon S3 which has a really super high fidelity stereo recorder, but it just can't cope with things especially once the drums and bass really start working.
I was thinking about taping something over the microphone holes, yet I wonder if this will rather muffle sound and be selective over different frequencies as per what gets attenuated.
Has anybody out there been there already?
