Good points Mark. Coming from the electronics manufacturing business, I would say it is more like $20 to $25 max, but I suppose it depends on the industry. Unfortunately, cost cutting is often done in areas most important to us like pots, connectors, and other mechanically used components. Flimsy mechanical components is a sure sign that most of the electronic components are bare bones too.

Another thing to consider is whether the OP likes external power converters (a.k.a. wall warts). Personally, I hate them and would much rather deal with a bunch of IEC power cables than a single wall wart. One reason manufacturers use wall warts is to save on cost and maybe size, but another is to avoid having to get the UL listing which is expensive.
