I too am not endorsing piracy. But I have heard that most major acts make
the big money on tours, not on CD sales. And the thing that will bring
people to your shows (and then to pay you for your recordings) is knowing
and liking your music, but they need to hear it first to develop the
interest. Ironic. Chicken/ egg.

A local example from here in the sticks - Im playing keys with a guy (worked
at Walmart) who wrote a CD's worth of country tunes, went to a studio
outside Nashville, and for about $8k had a very pro-sounding album produced.
That effort has allowed him to score quite a few well paying gigs that he
would never have otherwise. And of course, then some CD sales follow, but
profit-wise he makes much more from the live shows than the CD or Tshirt
sales. Having people 'pirate' his music will probably increase his success,
at least at this meager level.
