Subject:The latest OT rants.


Hi All,

The local scene in Buenos Aires isn't quite different of big cosmopolitan cities, where worldwide famous artists are doing concerts.

What think to share with you this time is something curious, and happens mainly with the rock bands.

As instruments are more and more cheap, many times with lower quality manuf. standards, probably that would make a bunch of hobbysts and 'just for fun' bands , to be flooding the pro venues.

Even here in Florida Street, where only pedestrians are allowed ( kinda Younge St. of Toronto) increasingly street performers can be seen as a mirror that regular shows as income is more and more common.

But what got me surprised was that the fact of many private clubs owners are asking for a fee for bands getting presentation possibilities.

And the worst, so called 'unknown bands' are paying those fees !
just to jump in the wagon of the popularity or as 'pre-requisite' to be faced.

Never imagined a pro musician paying for her/himself performing on a show.

Of my knowledge , owners are not giving away drinks, so why they are asking a fee to a multitude of bands awaiting in a row ?

Is that a local rare issue or is it a global trend ?

Hi All,

Can everyone please tone down the political aspects of the discussion. As noted, this is not a US-only list, even though the majority of members probably do reside here. There are plenty of forums to discuss politics; let's not try to muscle in on their turf.

I am curious, though, about the music scene in Europe, Asia, etc. Has it deteriorated in the same way that it has in the US? Was it ever as fertile a starting point as in '60s-'80s America? I'm not even sure I would *be* a musician if I hadn't grown up in the '60s and '70s, when not only being a musician was cool, but chops were cool.
