I've only heard of the bulb going out on one other pedal. Maybe that pedal was dropped or maybe it was just that bulbs time to die.

I think the Exp-100 is like other electronic eq. similar to computer serial ports etc. that shouldn't be dis/connected while turned on because damage can occur.

If you don't see any light inside near where the shutter goes in and out, you might try testing it to see if it is just the bulb. To test your pedal, try shining a flashlight at the receiver and see if you get any reading on the monitor. A bright flashlight aimed at the slot the black/white shutter passes through should provide some light to the photodiode.
