Subject:OT: how to get AC energy when main fails.

Hi All

This is to ask about something related to energy .

It happened that almost was ready to buy a 'bargain priced Far East made' generator , looow priced at a local chain (formerly a HomeDepot branch)

Luckily talked with a very skilled employee that told me about relationship between Horse Power and Watt consumption.

At my first look seemed to fit the bill BUT even closer the consumption of adding WATT of stuff like nebulizer, battery-charger, small fridge, TV, DVD, cable deco, and a few other not high energy demand gadgets, the generator still hadn't many TIMES the estimated consumption for just the starting peak of a more heavy motor, i.e. air-conditioning.

Realized that just adding Watt consumption labels doesn't work as an engine needs enough power for ignition after getting a flat response.

Don't remember the figures but the offer in hundreds turned out in thousands of bucks so just get rid out of that mad idea.

Remembered the issue when Bruce told us that has been with a long main shortage.

Hope he's comfortable again.

What I ask to the group is related to a simple matter that probably somebody already faced it:

Question:

What alternative energy do you use for the ADSL modem when electricity fails ?

There are ready-to-use devices as long electronics projects ' a la DIY' for turning DC to AC with a few transistors and a transformer 'done on a 'perfboard' (PCB) btw, anybody here has build up from the scratch something like that ?

It is a more reasonable option than buying even a cheapo generator (2 cylinders)
Sound that will be as useful as a lantern, i.e. a notebook will last for a few hours but found that still a voltage is needed to feed the ADSL modem,
and get 'Internet signal' to be connected with the outside world.

In my case, labeled as '12V AC / 0.8A'
(aka 800 milliAmpere)

Obviously, w/o electricity no Internet connection will be available as the ADSL(or cablemodem) will get off status, despite the notebook will remain active upon based on their charge.

Hope your hints.

Best,

Rafael
