Actually, this is a popular pursuit for DIY guitarists, or people who
want to use backline/house amps w/o changing their tone:
Go to http://www.amptone.com/

Fender put out an overpriced "Princeton Recording Amp" last year. The
lexicon Signature 284 was very popular, as are some hard to find
hughes&kettner 1/2 rack boxes. I think some older bass-preamps used
an EL84 for drive as well (SWR intersellar overdrive). Maybe a Boogie
as well (subway or something).

Another approach is to use a more sophisticated attenuator-- check out
Ted Weber's MASS line-- I find them to be pretty interesting and the
tone-stack is nice. I got good sounds taking a stock A100 amp and
running into the small MASS. There is also a very low cost resistive
kit on his site. It is small easy to solder together, and like $30.
Look in the kits->Weber originals category.

Using an attenuator or load resistor w/one of the many new/cheap 5-10W
<$300 tube guitar amps that have shown up in the last 2 yrs is a good
budget approach and can give some outrageous tones when you put in
quality tubes.
