I do Hush, Highway Star, Space Truckin, Maybe I’m a Leo and Smoke On the Water on either my Nord Electro or my XK1. The keyboard on the Electro actually takes the windmill chops better! What red plastic are you referring to???? My Electro and Stage both have metal chassis with real wood (not pressboard) endblocks. The only plastic on them is the knobs and buttons. They are lightweight, but they are very robust. I throw Velcro on the bottom of all my keyboards and they all sit securely on my stand, no fly away, no give, no nothing. I genuine concur with you on a lot things Clone related, but you’re way off-base on this one.

That’s just my opinion… The Nords have so much lightweight plastic they just feel like toys to me. Try doing a windmill chop on one. C’mon… try to play America and do a few Emerson chops! I bet that Nord goes flying past the guitar player. I feel that a keyboard must have some girth… some gravitas… Call me crazy, go ahead…

Again, it’s not the product as much as the relationship that matters here. And let’s be clear, I’m not saying Yamaha pianos suck: For years, in my big midi rig, the Motif Classic’s General Midi bank’s NATURALGRAND is my ‘go to’ piano sound. I think it’s great. But when terms like “little red toys” are bandied about, that’s just being ridiculous, and people should be aware that most of the time gear is chosen for its availability and ease of repair when on the road. You’d be hardpressed to find a major city where a Motif was not available, right? That doesn’t discount the fact that the Motif is great, but it’s not necessarily a greater instrument than the Stage. Same thing with Kurzweil. The economics of the industry has a lot to do with the visibility of a brand.

Stevie would not endorse a product he doesn't like. Of the endorsers I know, none endorses a product because it's free.

Wow Dave, that’s the kind of condescending and really uninformed response I would never expect out of you. If Yamaha weren’t giving Stevie product to parade on stage, how likely would he to still be using it? Not to mention that what Steve Wonder uses really has no bearing on “what the best stage pianoâ€� is.Â

Little red toys? The Stage is no more a toy than the XS8 or the XK3c. None are the real deal, all are compromises, and all have strengths and weaknesses. (Yes, the XK3c is an organ clone, but it’s a compromise at best.) I don’t see any Hammond organs and leslies on Stevie Wonder’s stage either, but that doesn’t make them toys.  Â

I find the Kurzweil PC3X piano ("Stage Piano" patch, #2) is really
nice...comparable to the Yamaha piano sample in the Nord Stage...but I can't warm
up to the KB3 organs that it has implemented. If orchestral or vintage
sounds are important to you, the PC3x is the absolute king. But nothing can
touch the Hammond/Leslie combinations, or the Clavinets and the ability to
modify either sound, on the Nord Stage. In a jazz context, the Nord is the
only piano that convinces me absolutely that I am playing a piano. That
being said, I absolutely love my PC3x as well.
One little tick about the Nord (both the 88 and the Compact).... when
I really get into it, and play with gusto percussively onto the upper end
of the keyboard, it seems to trigger the chorus effect button somehow...very
strange !! Anybody else experience this ??????
