Subject:Re: looking at Roland VK-8 or Nord? its a tossup...
You said Nord 76 but did you mean 73? The only Nord 76 is the Nord
Stage 76, which has a piano-style weighted action. The Stage Compact
73 has the 73-key waterfall organ action. Or you may have meant the
Nord Electro 73, which would be more in the same price range as the VK-8.
Anyway, I have a VK-8M, as well as a Nord Electro and the dual manual
Nord C1. I've also tried the Nord Stage and I'd say the organ is
perhaps a bit better than the Electro's but not by much. The Electro
can only play one sound at a time (although the organ sound allows
splits for upper/lower manual settings) whereas the Stage can be fully
split and layered with all its sounds.
The VK-8 is a fine organ and probably can be found at a good price.
The Electro should also be obtainable at a good price since it's been
around several years now. The Stage is not worth the extra cost over
the Electro just for the organ, unless you want the nicer acoustic
pianos and synth section, or the ability to split the keyboard with
different sounds.
I'd say the sound of the rotary effect in the Nords is more authentic
than the VK but the VK rotary effect is more user-adjustable. You can
adjust the slow and fast speeds, the acceleration rate, and mic
distance. This might be important if you want to experiment more with
the Leslie effect for recording, etc. The Nords don't have that
flexibility, but they make up for it in the quality of the rotary effect.
